Domain squatters should be punished

June 26, 2020 - Reading time: ~1 minute

I've got this idea for a new business.  I've been tossing it around for about a year now, maybe more.  It's interesting and exciting and I want to play with it more.

It involves the internet - I mean OK, most business ideas do anymore, but this one is centered around the internet and how much of our data is on it (no more spoilers!).

Naming stuff is hard, but if you're naming a company that is going to be centered around the internet, you need to name it something that will work well with an available .com domain.  This is hard enough in 2020 because so many businesses and individuals are online and have staked out their respective names.  That's fine, but beyond that, every 2- or 3-syllable combination of characters that is remotely pronounceable, if not taken by a legitimate business, has been taken by some squatter who will part with it for mere thousands (or tens of thousands) of dollars.  These greedy shitbags should be pushed into an active volcano.

That's all I got for now.

OK, a theme

Using another theme that came with Bludit, which is fun.  It has other themes but they generally seem to be for more creative people.  I would like to at least bring back the old I,d favicon and logo.  Maybe later.

On the plus side: I fixed my FPGA timing issue!  I'm almost worth my salary 😅

Ugh I have a job, too?!

Every day this browser tab mocks me.  I was going to at least set up a new theme here this weekend, but between being behind on work and my house trying to kill me (possibly related) it's probably not gonna happen.  If I can solve my FPGA timing issue today, maybe I'll splurge and do the theme.  Woooooooooooo

And another thing

I really liked this Bludit theme because it's clean and sparse, but it's ... I dunno ... a bit too clean and sparse.  Like show me posting dates, at least.  Gonna hunt for another one.

New Old Stock

OK so in the absence of new things to say, I'll start saying some old things.  Specifically, I'm going to start copying some content over from the old blog.  Not everything, mind you, just stuff that isn't embarrassing or stupid.  I will try to refrain from editing the old posts, but may fix spelling or glaring stupidity.  No promises anywhere.

Another note - I'll be preserving dates on stuff, so the stuff I'm adding here is all at the bottom.  Now that there's content, I'm not 100% happy with this particular Bludit theme.  Hmm.

Yet another note - man, I really liked bulleted lists back in the early 2000s.  I mean ... I still do?  But I sure used them a lot in these old posts.

Yeah we can see how that went

I mean I still plan to put stuff here, really!

I don't blog much

January 18, 2020 - Reading time: ~1 minute

I'm in the process of converting old stuff to less old stuff and I like to bloviate about the reasons for it, so I might just start blogging again.  On the other hand, I spend enough time in front of a computer as it is, so maybe I won't.  Life is uncertain!

Flickr

Historical note - holy crap, I totally forgot about this.  I should put some new photos up.

Also - LOL did I blow past #3

I have a Flickr account now.  Eh.  Douglas Adams said a profound thing:

  1. Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
  2. Anything that's invented between when you're fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
  3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things

I feel like I'm rapidly approaching #3.  Anyway, the Flickr photostream is here.
